what do you make of a sad ending?
the kind that makes you cry
involuntarily
the whole night
for nights
the kind that makes you toss and turn
in bed, oscillate between
consciousness and reality
and semi-sleep and pain

the kind that makes you wake
like you haven't slept
with eyes puffed and swelled
and thoughts still railing through your head.

what do you do with sad endings,
that makes you understand finally
that life often pushes a choice in your face
that isn't a choice at all
that love stories never end gayly
love never conquers it all.
