:: the Gaze ::

last week my lit lecturer told us about "the gaze" concept in psychoanalysis. in a nutshell, it's about how when you look at an object, there is an uncanny feeling that the object of your "gaze" is gazing back at you, and you might not even notice, or be aware of it.

now i'm sitting here on level6 of the nus lib, plugged into "to zanarkand", and people-watching. there is a certain mystery and intrigue in this. it's like you're behind those one-way glass in an interrogation room, looking out at all your unsuspecting subjects. dont you get an illusory sense of power, as tho you're omnisient? you feel faraway, detached from all that's going on.

and i do wonder, perhaps everyone feels like this too, when they're all alone, plugged into their md, and gazing out at everybody. maybe we're all silent observers who don't know we're the observed too.
